How do I grow my own pineapple plant at home?

Choose a beautiful, undamaged pineapple to start this adventure. Go for a ripe pineapple that doesn’t feel too soft and has a crown with green leaves. Do not take brown or dark fruit, because actually only the green ones are healthy. If possible, also opt for an organic pineapple. This means that there are fewer pesticides and other chemicals on it.

Check that there are no gray or dark spots on the sharp edges of the fruit and that there are no insects between the edges of the pineapple.

Step one

The first thing to do is remove the crown from the fruit. The best way is to twist it off by hand to encourage more natural root growth. If this does not work, you can of course simply cut the crown off with a knife.

Well done! Now proceed by removing the remaining pulp from the crown. This can rot and the plant will die. This is because this is the part where the new roots will appear. In the photo above you can see exactly where the new roots will emerge.

Step two

The second step is crucial for root growth and requires a little bit of daily attention. First, look for an appropriately sized vase or glass in which the pineapple crown can hang while the leaves remain dry.

Place the vase in a place where it is reasonably warm. After a few days the first roots become visible and after two to three weeks they are long enough to place in a pot with soil. Keep the soil moist and moisten the leaves every now and then. I

In the beginning, the leaves will probably turn brown. At this point, it is best to give a smaller amount of water several times a day. Pineapple plants are true survivors, but they do require adequate attention to perform well.

Step three

When the first carrots appear, the first hurdle has been overcome! Now we can transfer the plant to a flower pot filled with soil. Make sure to use an earthenware flower pot with holes in the bottom.

These ensure adequate drainage. You can also put a few pebbles in the pot to aid drainage.  

Choose regular potting soil to transfer the pineapple crown. Furthermore, your own pineapple plant will not require much extra care. The plant does not need an extra humid climate.

Just make sure the soil doesn’t get very dry or wet. Place the plant in a sunny spot and in the summer you can even put the plant outside so that it gets more sun. However, avoid temperatures below ten degrees Celsius. Pineapple plants do not tolerate cold well.

How long it takes to see the first pineapple grow depends entirely on how you care for the plant. It will take about six to eight weeks for your pineapple plant to have firm roots and after two months they will be fully grown. Water your plant about twice a week.

With good care, a pineapple can grow within a year and with less good care it can take two to three years. The moment your pineapple is growing, beautiful flowers will appear on its own.

From this point on, it will take about another six months until you have a full pineapple. The size of this can be a bit disappointing at first, but you will see that the more often you get a pineapple, the faster the process goes.
